Piping Live – Worlds Meeting 2009

Scotland becomes the world centre of piping and drumming this year as Glasgow hosts the World Pipe Band Championships and its renowned international piping festival, Piping Live.

The week long festival of piping is one of the UK’s most exciting annual celebrations of Scottish culture, running from Monday August 10th until Sunday 16th August. There will be an electric atmosphere as one of Europe’s most exciting cities welcomes visitors from around the globe.

The festival will showcase the vibrancy and diversity of the pipes by bringing some of the world’s top piping talent to perform with Scotland’s finest home grown artists across Glasgow’s world class venues and stunning outdoor spaces.

George Square will provide the city centre with a real buzz by staging free daily highlights. The National Piping Centre will be the festival’s hub, hosting come and try sessions, as well as performances in the outdoor Street Café from some of the best piping folk combos, duos and groups.

The festival week will climax at the World Pipe Band Championships on Saturday 15th August at Glasgow Green, the city’s oldest park space. Following the day’s intense competition and the crowning of the new world champions the party atmosphere will continue at the After Worlds Shindig – in honour of all of the competing bands.

Whether you are already a fan of traditional music or you are simply looking for a new city break destination, visiting Glasgow during this event will not only entertain the whole family but will offer plenty of other opportunities to make this a trip worth remembering.

The International Piping Concert on Friday 14th August will feature artists from across the globe at a piping spectacle leaving listeners in awe! With the best in contemporary and traditional styles of piping from Scotland and the rest of the World it is a concert not to be missed!

The World Pipe Band Championships will take place on Saturday 15th August on Glasgow Green. 200 bands from 16 different nations will compete for the coveted world title in front of an anticipated 40,000 enthusiastic spectators.

Finally the After World’s Shindig on the 15th August will be the party to end all parties following the conclusions of the World Pipe Band Championships. In Glasgow's Old Fruitmarket you can take in some of the best contemporary international piping around and be part of the ceilidh, going on until late! Come along and see some piping as you never thought possible at the After World’s Shindig!
