The Cairngorms

(Click on image to see bigger picture) The Cairngorms National Park is one of the wildest and highest areas of Britain with a unique wildlife. The high plateaus are located in this vast landscape of rolling mountains and corries, supporting heather moorlands and alpine grasslands. This is where we may find the elusive snow bunting and dotterel. The mountain tops and plateaus are often covered in snow except for a few months in the summer and this time enables us to explore the more remote areas.

The Caledonian Pine woods in Deeside support wildcat, pine marten, red squirrels and red deer. The River Dee provides a wonderful breeding ground among the many gravel banks for oystercatcher, golden plover and ringed ouzel.

Mar Lodge Estate has undertaken some significant research over the last 5 years with the long-term objective to restore the native pinewoods. NTS have been managing grazing levels, to allow the trees to regenerate and careful monitoring has shown that the vegetation continues to recover and there is a good crop of pine seedlings ready to burst through. Deer fences are known to kill black grouse and capercaillie so these have been removed, or marked, to reduce the impact on these species. The increasing numbers of black grouse on Mar Lodge are a good indication that this management regime is successful.

If we have time we also visit the Morrone Birkwood NNR, a rich birch wood with abundant juniper. This NNR also supports some rare wildflowers, such as twinflower and the more common chickweed wintergreen.
